The Poitou Charente region has much to offer locally, or within an easy drive away.

Local historic towns are St Maixent l'Ecole, Parthenay and Vasles (Mouton Village)

Parthenay - 30 minutes drive away and steeped in medieval history.  13th Century Chateau, the granite fortifications, Romanesque 17th & 18th century churches & the timber framed houses. Even if you are not a history fanatic, you are guaranteed to enjoy discovering the stunning architecture during an afternoon stroll around the citadel and the Saint – Jacques area of his little town and running along the side of the River Thouet in the heart of the Gātine countryside.

Les Forges offers a superb 27-hole gold course with an English-speaking pro on hand. Whilst Bois Pouvreau supports a beautiful lake for fishing, woodland walks with large curiously shaped natural rocks, picnic area, crazy golf, children's playground and Boules area.

Marais Poitevin or "La Venise Verte" – the Green Venice. Approx 45 minutes away is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Recently declared a regional park with an elaborate system of canals, dykes and slow-flowing rivers, picturesque houses & cycle paths. Take a punt on the canal. Why not take a picnic or stop off at one of the restaurants for lunch or dinner.

Bicycle Hire. Stay fit while you are on holiday with brand new adult bikes. Hire can be arranged along with a child seat if required. Helmets are provided. Sorry there are currently no children's' bikes available

Horse riding can be arranged at Centre de Beauregard, along with hats etc. For the 'Boys' or non-riders a spot of fishing on the Charente with rods provided makes lovely family day out with older children. Why not take a picnic & make a day of it. Lovely country setting away from it all.

Futuroscope is an adventure park with simulators, 3D films and many other exciting attractions. There are also large firework and laser displays during the evenings.  Recommended for ages 8+ and big kids!

Le Grand Breuil (at Rouille) for Karting.  So good that one family visiting Montifault went twice. Also available is Quads , Mini Moto's, Paint Balling & Cross-Cars. Ideal for families with teenagers!

Cycling. For the cyclists among you, there are some beautiful rides in the area. If you like green tracks click here for the local ones. If you are training for your next triathlon then the roads around us are a pleasure to cycle, less traffic, lovely scenery & a mix of hills & flat. Go early before the heat of the sun kicks in. Stop off at the bakers on the way back to pick up breakfast for the family!

La Vallee des Singes - Monkey Valley at Romagne. Over 350 monkeys live in freedom and harmony in this wooded nature reserve. A really good day out, take a picnic, feed the monkeys, see the gorillas and visit the farm yard area with goats, sheep, chickens etc. The kids will love it.

Le Chateau des Aigles - Eagles Castle at Chauvigny. Hovering between a fear of heights and an ecological introduction to birds of prey, discover the Chateau des Aigles. Set in breathtaking surroundings of the medieval town of Chauvigny.

Lambon Park - country park with a huge lake, walks, fishing, boats for hire, sandy beach. Ideal for small children as there is a really shallow area, safe for swimming, life guards etc. Play area with slide swings etc. The boating area is roped off for safety. Take a picnic and spend the day doing what you wish, or take the children on the train ride round the park!

Fete Des Traditions Paysannes (1st Sunday in August.) - Go back in time and see the whole village dress up in traditional costume, watch the procession on its journey through Menigoute village to Bois Pouvreau. In the afternoon you can see how they used to harvest and bale the straw in years gone by. Soak up the ambiance of a traditional French carnival. Disco and firework display in the evening.

La Rochelle One of the most attractive and unspoilt seaside towns in France. The Aquarium La Rochelle, is one of the best aquariums and well worth a visit!

Sanxay
- From the 1st to the 4th centuries Sanxay was an important place for cures and pilgrimages. The remains of the largest buildings (temples, ampitheatres and baths) are the main feature of this site. Sanxay is one of the best preserved and most interesting sanctuaries of the Gallo-Roman world.

Slightly further a field are the towns of Niort, Melle, Cognac, Angouleme, Limoges, Saintes, La Rochelle and Poitiers.
